對Aretha Franklin而言，唱歌是一個虔誠且神聖的信仰，她將渾厚的福音歌曲演唱感覺帶進了傳統靈魂樂，同時用歌聲串連了歌詞，節奏，旋律的活力與情感力量，進而從靈魂樂擴大至節奏藍調，流行樂，搖滾樂，成為實至名歸的靈魂樂歌后。

  孩童時期，Aretha Franklin在教堂中勤練福音鋼琴彈奏，在父親的教堂的音樂指導James Cleveland的教導下，朝福音歌手之路邁進，Aretha Franklin早婚生子，放棄教育，加入父親的福音樂團，在美國各地的教堂錄製的歌曲。

  在1960年，十八歲的Aretha Franklin與Columbia Records唱片公司簽下唱片合約，發行了許多演唱傳統流行樂，節奏藍調，靈魂樂與音樂劇名曲的專輯，以「Today I Sing The Blues」，「Operation Heartbreak」進駐全美節奏藍調單曲榜前十名。

  在1966年十一月，造就節奏藍調靈魂樂傳奇巨星Ray Charles的推手，Atlantic Records的副總裁Jerry Wexler說服Aretha Franklin加盟新東家，在1967，1968兩年內，Aretha Franklin以「I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)」，「Respect」，「Baby I Love You」，「(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman」，「Chain Of Fools」，「(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone」，「Think」，「The House That Jack Built」，「I Say A Little Prayer」攻陷全美熱門單曲榜TOP 10，建立了靈魂樂歌后的響亮名號。

   【A Portrait of the Queen 1970-1974】彙整了Aretha Franklin於1970年代初期發行的全美節奏藍調專輯榜冠軍專輯「Let Me In Your Life」，四張全美節奏藍調專輯榜第二名專輯「This Girl’s In Love With You」，「Spirit In The Dark」，「Young Gifted And Black」，「Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky)」，外加一張Aretha Franklin在錄製這五張專輯期間所錄製而在當時未能收錄在專輯中的錄音作品輯的黑膠唱片「Pledging My Love: Sessions Tracks」。 其中，除了「Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky)」是由以製作Michael Jackson經典專輯「Thriller」著稱的葛萊美獎製作大師Quincy Jones擔任製作，其餘專輯都是由Atlantic Records唱片公司的首席錄音師Todd Dowd，在1967年打造Aretha Franklin歌唱生涯第一個巔峰的Atlantic Records的共同創辦人Jerry Wexler，日後製作The Bee Gees，Norah Jones專輯聞名的製作人Arif Martin聯手製作。

專輯「This Girl’s In Love With You」中有全美節奏藍調單曲榜五週冠軍曲「Share Your Love With Me」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜雙週冠軍曲「Call Me」，翻唱The Beatles的全美節奏藍調單曲榜第五名暢銷曲「Eleanor Rigby」，搭配「Call Me」做雙單曲發行而晉升至全美熱門單曲榜第十三名的暢銷曲「Son Of A Preacher Man」，翻唱美國草根搖滾樂團The Band代表作的全美熱門單曲榜第十九名暢銷曲「The Weight」，同時還有比The Beatles的版本早兩個月發行的金曲「Let It Be」。

  與「This Girl’s In Love With You」同樣在1970年發行的專輯中有全美節奏藍調單曲榜三週冠軍曲「Don’t Play That Song」，晉升全美節奏藍調單曲榜第三名的雙單曲「Spirit In The Dark / The Thrill Is Gone」，全美熱門單曲榜第二十三名暢銷曲「Spirit In The Dark」。1972年專輯「Young Gifted And Black」有全美節奏藍調單曲榜雙週冠軍，全美熱門單曲榜第五名，葛萊美獎女歌手Natalie Cole在2006年翻唱過的Aretha Franklin創作曲「Day Dreaming」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜第五名的雙單曲「Border Song (Holy Moses) / You And Me」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜第七名雙單曲「All The King’s Horses / April Fools」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜第九名暢銷曲「Oh Me Oh My (I’m A Fool For You Baby)」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜第二名，全美熱門單曲榜第九名暢銷曲「Rock Steady」。1973年專輯「Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky)」收錄了全美節奏藍調單曲榜雙週冠軍曲「Angel」。1974年專輯「Let Me In Your Life」中有全美節奏藍調單曲榜雙週冠軍，全美熱門單曲榜第十九名暢銷曲「I’m In Love」，全美節奏藍調單曲榜冠軍曲「Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)」，翻唱靈魂樂傳奇對唱組合Marvin Gaye，Tammi Terrell名曲晉升至全美節奏藍調單曲榜第六名的「Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing」。
